Early Life & Biography

Victor was born in Garden City, Kansas, to his parents, who originated from Mexico.  His mother was abusive, and at the tender age of seven, she left him with his siblings never to return. This is when his dad introduced him to boxing, a sport he wasn’t keen on. His dad was an alcoholic who also left them four years after his mother left. His dad wasn’t anyway better from his mother and used to beat them after their mother left.

After his parents left them, they were forced into the foster care system where Victor ended with the Ford family. For years he didn’t know where his siblings were and only reunited with some of them in 2002 after his older sister became a legal adult and gained custody of Victor and his younger brother. This saw his moving from Kansas to Denver, Colorado.

Ron Lyle noticed Victor’s talent when they met a community center where Ron was a supervisor, and Victor was training there. Ron trained and guided him to the Junior Olympics tournament, where he won his division with a perfect 5-0 record at the age of 16.

After his win, Robert Garcia, a former boxer, noticed him, and immediately, the pair clicked, and Victor agreed to move in with him and his father, who by then was Fernando Varga’s personal trainer. To this day, Victor is grateful to Robert as he helped mold his boxing career.

After becoming professional, he won his first seven matches with ease but controversially got disqualified in his eighth match against Corey Alarcon.
