King was born in Cleveland, Ohio. At first, he joined Western Reserve University, where he considered taking law as a career. He later graduated at John Adams High in 1951.
After dropping out of Kent State University, King started an illegal bookmaking operation. He was arrested on several incidents where at one time, he shot Hillary Brown in the back claiming he attempted to rob one of his Gambling houses. Lucky enough, the case was determined as Justifiable homicide.
However, the second time he was sentenced for four years for killing Sam Garret, who was his employee for he owed him $600. The case led to the conviction of second-degree murder. At the Marion Correctional institution where he served, he decided to self-educate himself and read everything that he came across at the prison library. In 1983 he was pardoned by Jim Rhodes, Ohio Governor in support by letters from many people but to mention a few including Jesse Jackson, Coretta Scott King, George Voinovich, Art Modell and Gabe Paul.

King was married to his wife Henrita King who later died in December 2010. They had three children, one biological daughter Debbie and two adopted sons, Carl and Eric and five grandchildren. He is politically active were in 2004, he campaigned for George W. Bush and later on for Barrack Obama in 2008 in the presidential election. King runs annual turkey giveaways which he offers thousands if turkeys amongst needy people in South Florida each year on Christmas.
