Steven Patrick Garvey was born on December 22, 1948, in Tampa, Florida. His parents moved to Long Island, New York, when he was a child. During his teenage years, he was a batboy for the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Detroit Tigers.

Garvey completed his schooling from Chamberlain High School and later attended Michigan State University, where he was part of the college’s football and baseball team. He credits his football coach Duffy Daugherty for helping to become a multi-sport athlete in his choosing MSU.

Garvey started his professional basketball career in 1968 when the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted him in the 1st round of the MLB draft. At the age of 20, he made his Major League debut. Initially, he played as a pinch hitter and scored his first hit off Denny Lemaster of the Houston Astros. He scored his first home run in a game against Montreal Expos in 1970.

In 1974, Garvey became one of only two players to have started an All-Star Game as a write-in vote. In the same year, he had his first of six 200-hit seasons and won the NL MVP award. In 1982, Garvey signed a deal with the San Diego Padres for five years. Popular sports magazine, Sports Illustrated ranked the signing as the fifteenth best free-agent signing ever. In the first season with the team, he broke the National League’s record for consecutive games played, and was named the National League Player of the Week. Garvey scored 114 hits, 22 doubles, 14 home runs, and 59 RBIs in consecutive 100 matches. He made his final appearance in a game in May 1987.

After retirement from his professional baseball career, he headed Garvey Communications and was involved in television production.

  1. #6 Steve Garvey was an all star first baseman with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a fine clean cut player and a good example for young players coming into the league.He lwas a very clean cut individual and a role model for the younger players coming up.

  2. He’s a great guy in many ways and made a number of unfortunate decisions, which he completely acknowledges. He’s not worth $6 million because after quite a few years of high salaries, though nothing like today’s money, he got all the way to zero and had to start over with speaking engagements and card signings. However, he lives well in Palm Desert and we can be glad he’s got some calmness back in his life. Had he been born a few years later he would have $50 million in the bank, but then Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale never got paid nearly what Garvey did, so it works in both directions.
