Early Life

Robert Rodriguez was born in 1968 on June 20th. He was born as a Mexican, to Mexican parents. His mother, Rebecca, had a daytime job as a nurse, and his father, by the name of Cecilio, was a salesman. His interest in movies was sparked from the early age of eleven. His father had gifted him a VCR, which was paired with a camera. This gave the young Robert incentive to pursue a career in the film industry.

His first videotaping assignment was when he was in high school, and he was supposed to record the football games happening at school. His footage style was unfavorable though, as he gave a cinematic style to the footage itself, with him recording the reactions of the parents and the ball in the air, and not of the actual game happening on the field. He, along with his friend named Carlos Gallardo, shot tapes together at school.

Robert had an interest in cartooning, which he developed when in college. However, his grades were not good enough for him to enroll in the film studies course at the college. This was when he decided to bring his comic strips into circulation, calling them Los Hooligans. His siblings proved to be the inspiration behind the cartoon characters. Rodriguez continued to film and produce short films, while his comic strips were published in columns of the Daily Texan, a student newspaper. This continued for three years.

He finally reserved a seat in the film studies program of the university, when his films of the action and horror genres were accepted as entries. His short film, shot on a 16mm camera, called Bedhead, was critically acclaimed.

Rodríguez announced in April 2006 that he and his wife Elizabeth Avellán, with whom he had five children (Rocket, Racer, Rebel, Rogue, and Rhiannon), had separated after 16 years of marriage.

The films starred Antonio Banderas as well as Salma Hayek, the latter being introduced to American audiences for the first time through the trilogy.
