Renee is the daughter of two music teachers, and she was born on February 14, 1959, in Indiana. She grew up in Churchville, New York, and her great grandparents were born in Prague, and they later immigrated to the US. Fleming then attended the Churchville Chilli High School, and her tutor was Rob Goodling, who taught her orchestra, Chorus, voice, and music history.
Later she went to the State University of New York at Potsdam, and while she was at the SUNY, she started singing with a jazz trio. Then she graduated at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.
When she was a student, she spent many summers at the Aspen Music Festival School, and she also won the Fulbright Scholarship, which allowed her to work in Europe. Later she sang at many jazz clubs so that she would pay for her further studies at the Julliard School, and her voice teacher at Juilliard was Beverley Peck Johnson.

Fleming began with performing in smaller concerts and with many small opera companies. Till then, she was still graduating from Juilliard.
