The son of a Spanish immigrant, Raul wasn’t privileged in his old days. Raul had three brothers and four sisters. None of his siblings and he were allowed to attend classes. Later Raul and Fidel insisted on attending the Jesuit school of Colegio Dolores in Santiago and Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Havana.
Raul mainly focused on social science in his undergraduates. He became an active socialist and joined the youth section of the Soviet oriented Cuban Communist Party. Castro married Vilma Epsin, daughter of a reputed lawyer for Bacardi Rum Company. Vilma was a chemical engineer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After tying knots on 26 January 1959, Vilma became the president of the Cuban Federation of Women. Alejandro Castro Epsin is their only son, and they have three daughters- Deborah, Mariela, Nilsa, respectively.
Presently Mariel Castro supervises the Cuban National Center for Sex Education. Vilma Epsin passed away on 18 June 2017.
