Career

Known for being one of the most notorious criminals in history, Miguel had set up a drug trafficking empire where he controlled the trafficking over almost the entire Mexico and The US-Mexico border. Kiki Camarena, an undercover US DEA(Drug Enforcement Administration), had infiltrated deep enough in Miguel’s organization.

Based on Camarena’s information, Mexican soldiers backed by helicopters went and destroyed 2500 acres of marijuana plantation known as “Ranch Buffalo” being operated under the name of “Operation Godfather.” The plantation’s worth is estimated to be $ 8 billion. Camarena went on to expose government officials, and lawmakers have ties to the organization.

On February 7, 1985, Gallardo ordered Camarena to be kidnapped. With the help of the Jalisco Police under Gallardo’s payroll, Camarena was captured and brought to a ranch owned by Miguel. They then interrogated and tortured him for over 30 hours. On February 9, Camarena died when a hole was made in his head using a tire iron. His body was found along with his helicopter’s pilot Alfredo Zavala in a ranch in Michoacan State.

In response to this, one of the most extensive DEA investigations titled “Operation Leyenda” was undertaken, which found Miguel guilty of the homicide along with Ernesto and Rafael. On being under pressure from the US Government, Rafael and Ernesto were arrested, but Miguel was safe due to political protection.

Even while incarcerated, he continued operating the most significant drug cartels just using a cellphone until he was transferred to a maximum-security prison in 1990 to serve his 37-year sentence. With time his health deteriorated, and in March 2013, Miguel started the legal procedure to continue the rest of his sentence in his home after his 70th birthday. On April 29, 2014, his petition was denied by the court, and on December 18, 2014, he transferred to a medium-security prison in Guadalajara. His request to continue his sentence at home was rejected by Mexico City court on February 20, 2019.

Miguel decided that the best way to let the organization function after his arrest was to divide the territories amongst the top drug narcos in Mexico. The Tijuana route went to his nephews and nieces. The control of the Matamoros corridor was left undistributed to Juwan Garcia Abrego, who wasn’t a party to the 1989 pact.
