Mark Whitacre began his career in 1983 when he started working as a Ph.D. scientist at Ralston Purina. The following year, he became the Vice President at Degussa, which he served until 1989. After leaving Degussa, he joined ADM as the President of the BioProducts division. Three years later, in 1992, he became the Corporate Vice President of ADM besides continuing his position as the President of the BioProducts division.

For the period between 1992 and 1995, he acted as a cooperating witness for the FBI, who was investigating ADM for price-fixing. He left ADM in 1995 and joined Future Health Technologies (FHT) as the CEO. FHT was soon renamed to Biomar International, where he worked until he went to prison in 1998. In March of 2008, he became the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) and President of operations.
