Lemieux was born to Pierrette, a stay-at-home mother, and Jean-Guy Lemieux, who is an engineer. He, with his brothers Alain and Richard, grew up in a working middle-class family in a town named Ville-Émard. Mario started practicing hockey at the age of three in his basement, before using actual equipment, he and his brothers used wooden kitchen materials as hockey sticks and pucks.

Lemieux was drafted in the 1984 Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, who wanted a natural goal scorer to improve their playing as they had finished dead last for the previous two seasons.
