Lidia was born in Paula, Croatia. She is the daughter of Erminia and Vittorio Motika. At her young age, the family lived under the Marshal Tito Communist regime in Yugoslavia though they later fled to Trieste, Italy, along with her sibling. After two years, they were granted their application to emigrate to the United States, where they landed in New York City together with her family in 1958. The American Sponsors, Catholic Relief Services found them home and found a job for her father, and they ultimately settled. At the age of 14, she started working in restaurants, first at a bakery, and then later at a pizzeria on the upper west side of Manhattan.

Lidia got married at the age of nineteen, to Felix Bastianich, a fellow Istria- Italian immigrant and restaurant worker from Labin, Istria. They two had met on Lidia’s sixteenth birthday, and they got married in 1966. The couple has two children together, a son Joseph and daughter Tanya. They opened two restaurants in queens, Buonavia “good road” was the first restaurant they opened in 1971.

The success of the restaurant sponsored the opening of the second one in 1973, Villa Secondo, which hit in just a matter of months. They sold the restaurants in Queens and opened a new restaurant in Manhattan named Felidia in 1981, and Luckily, it made a huge success. The couple got divorced in 1997, after several years of marriage presuming because they had differences in ideas about business expansion.

  1. I like Lidias cooking show in watched her for probably 7 years since 2013 to 2020. I am Italian I guess for more then 4 generations. My great grandparents n grandparents were from Italy. My Dads parents were fromPerugia Italy. My mother’s Dad was from Scicily, I’m pretty sure, Catania or some small village in mountains he used to work as a farmer, growing Olive trees, grape vines and made wine. He must have come to America when he was 17. He worked as a machinist in a machine shop. He had his own truck delivered fruits n vegetables, to wealthy people in Shaker Heights, Ohio. My maternal grandmother was born in Cleveland her name was Trano, Rose. She cooked the most fabulous Lasagna, Baked Rigatoni, wonderful cakes n desserts, and taught my mother & she was a fantastic cook, her n my father taught me how to cook some of their specialties. Like, chicken cattatorrie, wild mushrooms, peppers grilled, in broiler, with garlic, brushetta, Baked Rigatoni, pizzas, to mention a few. I love your show hope to always have it on for awhile. Even if it’s on in sindication, it’s very relaxing I learn from your recipes n cooking techniques.
