Left was born in a Detroit suburb on 9 July 1970 to a Jewish family. They later moved to Coral Springs, Florida, with his family. Unto his education, he left attended Coral Springs High School and was a member of the debate team and president of the Jewish youth group at the school. He further proceeded to North-eastern University in 1993.

Andrew started his career with Universal Commodity Corp, a high-pressure supplies brokerage firm that employed salespeople to make close calls and push “questionable investments.” After working for nine months in the company, Left quit in March 1994. It was after the National Futures Association, in December 1998, sanctioned the firm. Consequently, Left was required to take an ethics-training course as part of the review into the firm for making fake accounts to sell commodity futures contracts.

By the age of 24, Left had become active in short selling. He mentioned that the reason he started short selling stocks was his experience with Universal Commodity Corp.  The shares were promoted by Boiler rooms. However, Left started shorting stocks from bulletin-board scams when the boiler rooms eventually went out of business.
