John Prine was born on the 10th of October 1946 in Maywood, Illinois, the U.S. to parents, William Mason Prine and Verna Valentine. His father was a tool-and-die maker while his mother was a homemaker. At 14 years of age, he started playing guitar, which was taught to him by his brother, David. When it comes to his education, he has attended Old Town School of Folk Music and Proviso Township High School. He has worked as a mailman for five years before joining the U.S. Army. After completing his service in the Army, he began his career in music in Chicago.

He then married Rachel Peer in 1984 but got divorced four years in 1988. He then married Fiona Whelan Prine in 1988, who later became his manager.
