James Orsen Bakker was born on 2nd January in the year 1940 in Muskegon. He is the son of Furnia Lynette Furn Irwin and Raleigh Bakker. He went to primary school in Muskegon and also attended North Central University. He met Tammy Faye in the year 1960 in his University. During that time, he used to work in a departmental store.

Both of them got married on 1st April in the year 1961 and left their college to become evangelists. They were blessed with two children named Tammy Sue and Jamie Charles.
