Jersey Shore is a popular American reality TV series. The series ran on MTV in the period between 3rd December 2009 and 20th December 2012 in the U.S. for six seasons and 71 episodes. The series was based on the lives of 8 housemates at a vacation home in Seaside Heights for the seasons 1,3,5,6, South Beach, Florida for season 2 and Florence, Italy for season 4. The show was incredibly popular, and journalists have often listed as one of the most notable shows of the time.
The show was so successful that few cast members of the show received their spin-off shows on MTV. On the 20th of August 2017, a one-off television special, “Reunion Road Trip: Return to the Jersey Shore,” was aired on the E! Network. On the 5th of April 2018, a reunion series, “Jersey Shore: Family Vacation,” premiered on MTV, which is considered a new series and not the 7th season of the show.
Inception
VH1 producer Anthony Beltempo came up with the idea of a show that focused on the guido lifestyle for TV but in the form of a competition series. Executive producer, SallyAnn Salsano created a new concept, inspired by her summers in a Jersey summer storehouse. MTV Networks President felt that that the show was better suited to MTV as opposed to VH1.
The series followed the lives of 8 housemates that would be spending their summer at a vacation home in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, U.S. Season 1’s cast members were Angelina Pivarnick, Jennifer Farley, Michael Sorrentino, Nicole Polizzi, Paul DelVecchio, Ronald Ortiz-Magro, Samantha Giancola, and Vincenzo Guadagnino.
The show premiered on the 3rd of December 2009 with back-to-back episodes, averaging 1.375 million viewers. Although the show failed to impressive numbers initially the numbers, rose incredibly quickly, and in the finale, it had 4.8 million viewers. The show was ranked at #1 in its period versus all cable competition in the (12-34) age group and was MTV’s highest-rated original series telecast in almost two years.
Evolution
The show went on to continue for multiple seasons with the second season having 12 episodes and was shot in South Beach, Florida, the U.S. The second season premiered on 29th of July 2010, averaging 5.252 million viewers. In the third season, the cast returned to Jersey Shore, but this time cast member Angelina was replaced with Deena Nicole Cortese.
The premiere of the third season drew 8.45 Million viewers, which made it MTV’s most viewed series telecast ever. The fourth season was filmed in Italy and premiered on the 4th of August 2011 while both the 5th and the 6th season was once again shot in Seaside Heights.
The success of the show led to cast members getting their spin-off shows on MTV. Nicole and Jenny received their spin-off show, which was titled “Snooki & JWoww,” and had 12 episodes. Pauly received his spin-off show titled “The Pauly D Project,” which also had 12 episodes. Both the shows premiered in 2012, and while “The Pauly D Project” was canceled after a season, “Snooki & JWoww” had four successful seasons. “Jersey Shore” also had a DVD release.
