Anthony Cruz was born on 9 March 1972 to an American-American mother and a Dominican father in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up with his sister and mother in the East New York neighborhood. AZ started writing for rap when he was just 12. He became friends with Queens-based young rapper Nas in the early 1990s. Nas began to work on his debut album Illmatic and asked Cruz to work in a studio on him. AZ appeared and had a verse about “Life’s a Bitch” on the album intro. EMI Records offered Cruz a record deal after Illmatic was released in 1991.
