Diana Danelys de Los Santos, popularly known for her stage name Amara La Negra was born on 4 October 1990 in Miami, Florida, to a single mother, Ana Maria Oleaga. Amara’s mother had immigrated to the USA from the Dominic Republic. She worked in 5 jobs to support her daughter.
Amara graduated high school and attended college, where she enrolled for a mortuary Science course but later changed to Business Administration before she also dropped it to pursue her career in music. As a child, she faced a lot of discrimination due to her color.

Amara began her musical career on a Spanish show, Sabado Gigante, at the age of 4 and was the only dark-skinned girl on the cast of the show, which she featured for six years. After the show, she became a dancer to successful Latin artists Tito Puente and Celia Cruz. Amara later formed a group in her teenage years called Amara, but unfortunately, it did not last for long as they struggled to stay together.
She decided to retain the name Amara and later added La Negra, which means black girl in Spanish.
