Weezer, which originated in Los Angeles, California, is an American rock band which is active since 1992. The band members consist of Rivers Cuomo, who is the lead vocalist and lead guitarist, Patrick Wilson, who plays the drums, Brian Bell, who plays the guitar and is in the backing vocals and Scott Shriner who plays the bass and is in the backing vocals. They specialize in the genres of alternative rock, power pop, pop-rock, pop-punk, geek rock, and emo.

Their debut album, Blue Album, which was released in 1994, attained a multiplatinum title. This album has singles like “Undone- The Sweater Song,” “Say It Ain’t So,” which helped the album to reach this status. Pinkerton, their second album didn’t make much success immediately as their previous one as the album had more abrasive sound, but later on, got it’s required recognition and was one of the best albums of the 1990s along with Blue Album.

Their third album, Green Album, which was released in 2001, also got a lot of success. Maladroit, their fourth album, was released in 2002 didn’t reach much higher sales and did okay in the market. Their most famous single “Beverly Hills” was from their fifth album Make Belief, which was released in 2005.

This was the first single which topped the charts of US Modern Rock Tracks, and it was also the first single to be on the Billboard Hot 100 in its top ten list. It went on to make more successful albums like Red Album, Raditude, Hurley, Everything Will Be Alright at the End, White Album, and Pacific Daydream.

Inception

Weezer was formed on 14th February 1992, which consisted of Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Matt Sharp, and Jason Cropper and released their first album and released songs like “Undone-The Sweater Song.” They performed for the band Dogstar on 19th March 1992 and was their first show since inception. Geffen Records signed them after listening to their demo called “ The Kitchen Tapes” in June 1993.

Some of their singles are “Buddy Holly,” “Undone-The Sweater,” were very much appreciated. “ Buddy Holly” won the Best Alternative Music Video and Two Billboard Music Video Awards. This album was very successful and has received the quadruple-platinum title and was the best-selling album during the 1990s.

After their first album, they went on a small break in 1994, and they started working on their second album Pinkerton which was released on 24th September 1996 and had singles like “El Scorcho,” “The Pink Triangle” and many more. This album was not popular initially but later on, got it’s required recognition and was voted the 16th highest album of all time.

After the Pinkerton tour in 1997 took a pause from their schedule of making hit albums. Sharp left the band eventually, and Mikey Welsh was hired as their new bassist. The band faced a hard time during 1998 due to frustrations and disagreement between the group members. Wilson went to Portland, his hometown for some peace of mind, and Cuomo fought with depression during that time and didn’t even want to face the sunlight. They, however, fought together and overcame this situation and made their comeback in 2000.

Evolution

After, their comeback they first performed at the Fuji Rock Festival. Since that, they started writing new songs and also did live shows. They released their third album, “Green Album,” in the summer of 2000 as they sang some songs in their tour that was not available in their previous album, and their fans demanded them to release the studio versions of those songs. Scott Shriner replaced Welsh in 2001 as he left due to his mental health.

Maladroit, their fourth album was released on 14th May 2002, but his record didn’t get much hype as the previous ones. But, the music videos of the singles “Dope Nose” and “Keep Fishin” gained popularity and were massively appreciated by the critics.

They, later on, made more albums like Make Believe in 2003, The Red Album in 2007, Raditude and Hurley in 2009, Everything Will Be Alright at the End and the White Album in 2014, Pacific Daydream in 2017, Teal Album and Black Album in 2018 and Van Weezer in 2019. All of their albums were very successful.

Awards & Achievements

They were nominated for the Grammy’s for the Best Rock song for their song “Beverly Hills” in 2006 for the Best Rock Album for their album “Weezer” and “Pacific Daydream” in 2017 and 2019 respectively. They won one Grammy award for the Best Music Video for their single “Pork and Beans” in 2009, which was directed by Matthew Cullen.
