Early Life
Vince Gilligan was born to a grade school teacher called, Gail and George Vincent Sr. who was an insurance agent in 1967 in Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A. He also has a younger brother named Patrick. After their parents got divorced in 1974, the boys were raised in Farmville and Chesterfield County.
At this time, he was friends with Angus Wall who grew up to be a film director. Angus’ mother, Jackie who was Gail’s colleague at the grade school, often lent her film camera to the duo, and they spent most of their time shooting science fiction movies with it. One of their films was called “Space Wreck,” which went on to win an award at a film competition for their age category at the University of Virginia.
It was because of the constant support of Jackie, who took the boys out to watch movies at the mall and also Vince Gilligan’s father, who introduced him to ‘film noir’ at an early age alongside westerns, that Vince Gilligan developed an interest in the visual arts. Later Vince, with his imagination and wide reading, got an opportunity to study at the reputed and widely renowned Interlochen Center for the Arts with a scholarship.
After the eighth grade, however, Vince returned to Chesterfield and continued his education. Later, he went to New York University’s Tisch School of Arts from where he got a degree in film production. During his time at NYU, he came across Mark Johnson who was judging a script-writing competition in which he had participated. It is through him that Vince Gilligan got introduced to the creator of “X Files,” Chris Carter.

I loved BREAKING BAD!! (I secretly had thoughts in that direction when I started Pharmacy School at my State University, but they don’t come even close to teaching you anything like that.) I’m now hooked on BETTER CALL SAUL, although it DID take longer than BREAKING BAD did.
The original casting on BREAKING BAD was absolutely brilliant, Mike Ermantraut being the most interesting, his presence greatly added to BETTER CALL SAUL. I’m anxiously awaiting your next series.
