On June 14, 1956, Valerie June bowman was born to James E Bowman and Barbara T Bowman, in Shiraz, Iran. Her father was a pathologist and geneticist ran a hospital for children in Shiraz in 1956. Her family was forced to move to London when she was five years old and later moved to Chicago in 1963, and her parents are of European and American descent.

As a child, Jarrett mostly spoke Persian, French, and English.
