Trip Hawkins was born as William Murray Hawkins III. He was born on 28^th December 1953 in Pasadena, California, in the United States. He is of white ethnicity. His parents were William Hawkins, Jr. and Helen Hawkins. He was raised together with his sister Jennifer Hawkins.

He attended Harvard University, where he obtained his undergraduate degree majoring in Strategy and Applied Game Theory. He was very smart in his work and thus graduated in 1976 with the best honors.
