Thomas Cunningham Thayer is the eldest son of Patricia Thayer, a violinist and singer and James Thayer, a businessman, a community leader, and a retired Army officer and was born at Portland, Oregon, on 7th November 1960. He had three younger brothers and one younger sister. The family later moved to Beaverton, Oregon and Thomas practically grew up there.

Thayer had a musical background as his mother was an excellent singer and played the violin well. During his childhood, he listened to The Beatles and many other 1960s pop music.
