Thomas Earl Petty was born on October 20, 1950, in Gainesville, Florida, to his parents Earl Petty and Kitty (Avery) Petty.
He was interested in music after he met Elvis Presley. He became a fan of Presley the moment he met him. Petty dropped out of high school when he was 17 years old and went on to form a band.
