Thomas Michael Glavine was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on March 25, 1966. He spent most of his childhood days in Billerica, Massachusetts. He completed his schooling from Billerica Memorial High School, where he was a letterman in ice hockey as well as baseball. Glavine was a four-year member of the National Honor Society.

Tom Glavine started his professional career in 1984 when he was drafted by both the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL Entry Draft, and the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball organization in the 2nd round of the 1984 amateur baseball draft. He decided to play baseball and made his debut in 1987.
