Time Warner was a cable television company from America. Charter Communication owned the same in 2016. Before getting acquired, it was the second-largest cable company in the U.S. by revenue. It operated in 29 states. The headquarter is currently located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

From 2009 to 2016, Time Warner Cable was an entirely independent company, contributing to the name under license from its previous parent. It was acquired by Warner Communications after a while. In My 2016, Time Warner Cable was sold to Charter Communications and Bright House Network for $78.7 Billion and $10.1 Billion, respectively. The company is now run under the name Spectrum in most markets.

Inception

Time Warner Cable was formed by the merger of Time Inc.’s cable television company, American Television and Communications Corp. And Warner Cable, which was a division of Warner Communications in 1992. The merger was agreed in 1989 by Time Inc. with Warner Communications. It was the largest media conglomerate in the world as it started with a market value of $15.2 Billion. In 1995, the Southern Tier On-Line Community was launched by the company. It was a cable modem service, which was later known as Road Runner High-Speed Online. Glen Britt maintained the position of CEO from 2001 until 2013.

Evolution

To survive the situation, Time Warner was sold to Internet provider AOL in a deal worth a whopping $350 Billion. Unfortunately, the merger proved to be ill-fated as the Internet bubble burst in 2001. The following year, AOL-Time Warner suffered a record loss of $99 Billion. It resulted in countless firings, and it soon became known as the biggest M&A failure in corporate history.

Amid pressure on the publishing industry in 2013, the company planned to spin off Time Inc. as a separate company. Time Warner Cable was planning about the sale of the company. Their first possible buyer was Charter Communications, but in November 2013, Comcast expressed interest in acquiring the company. Pressured, Charter increased their bid.

The possible merger with Comcast worth $45.2 Billion was met with backlash from various groups as they feared that the size of the company would reduce competition and would give Comcast a higher level of control in the U.S. In 2015, Comcast announced that the merger had been called off. The acquisition of Time Warner Cable by Charter Communications was completed in 2016 in a deal valued at $78.7 Billion.

They also confirmed that they would continue with the proposed $10.1 Billion acquisition of Bright House Networks. After the confirmation of the deal, the Time Warner Cable brand was phased out, and a new brand Spectrum was introduced to distinguish itself from Time Warner, which was later acquired in 2018 by AT&T.
