He was born Timothy Ross Armstrong in California, the United States, on 25 November 1965. His father, Don Armstrong, passed away at the age of 81 in 2012, and his mother’s name is not available to the general public. When Tim was five years old, he met Matt Freeman in Albany, California, while playing Little League Baseball, and many years later, they formed a band.

In 1985 Tim and his former classmate Matt Freeman formed a band called Basic Radio. Although they did not record any albums or EP’s they recorded demos and later broke up. Armstrong and Freeman formed yet another band Dance Hall Crashers in 1989. The band consisted of Joel Schaaf, Erik Larsen, Andrew Champion, and Grant Mclntire. They both joined the band Downfall, but it lasted for only three months.
