The Duffer Brothers is an award-winning American duo that is made up of twin brothers Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, who are film and television writers, producers, and directors as well. The brothers are famous as the creators and the executive producers of the science fiction-horror series by the title of Strange Things on Netflix. The duo was also the writers and directors of the psychological horror film that was released in 2015 by the title of Hidden.

The Duffer Brothers were born in Durham, North Carolina, the United States, on 15 February 1984. They commenced their learning at the Duke School for children up to grade 8. After the eighth grade, they enrolled at Charles E. Jordan High School in Durham. The duo then relocated to Orange, California, in order to study film and the joined the Dodge College of Films and Media Arts. The college was at Chapman University, and they graduated from college in 2007.

Inception

Ross and Matt Duffer began making films while they were in the third grade and where they used a Hi8 video camera that they had gotten from their parents as a gift. Their passion for films is the one that drove them to take film and media arts as a major at the University.

After completing their studies, the brothers wrote and also directed several short films, and it was at this time that their script for the horror film Hidden was noticed and acquired by Warner Bros. Pictures. They were given an opportunity to direct this film in 2012, and the movie was finally released in 2015. It was still around this time that director M. Night Shymalan read the script of their film, and he ended up giving the brothers a job as writer/producers of the series Wayward Pines on FOX Television.

Evolution

Having gotten enough experience on television, the brothers started pitching the idea for Stranger Things. Their idea was quickly bought by Dan Cohen, and he took it to Shawn Levy, who was the owner of the production company by the name of 21 Laps. With the production company on board, the show was very marketable, and Netflix picked it up without hesitation.

The show Strange Things was finally released on 15 July 2016 to overwhelming praise from various people. The show was praised mainly for characterization, pacing, atmosphere, acting, directing, writing, and, most importantly, for its homages to the 1980s genre films. A short time after being released, the show began developing a cult following online, and it became even popular as time went by.

In August 2016, Netflix renewed the series for season two, which consisted of nine episodes, with the first one being released on 27 October 2017. The series was renewed for a third season in December 2017, and it had eight episodes. The fourth season of the show was renewed in September 2019. At the same time, Netflix announced that they had signed a deal with the Duffer Brothers for a nine-figure amount. This deal was for additional television shows and films over multiple years.

Other notable films that the Duffer Brothers has either directed, wrote or produced are; We Fall Down, Eater, The Big Toe, Honeymoon, The Milkman, Saturday Night at Norm’s, and Road to Moloch among others.
