Terry McAuliffe started his career by working in the re-election campaign of Jimmy Carter. He was named the national finance director. However, he started his business venture at an early age. At just 14 years old, he became the founder of McAuliffe Driveway Maintenance.

In 1985, he became the founder of a local bank called Federal City National Bank. Later, he became the youngest chairperson of the bank. In 1991, the bank was merged with Credit International Bank, and McAuliffe was named as the vice-chairman.
