Koppel was born in Nelson, England, as an only child. His parents were German Jews who had fled Germany following Adolf Hitler’s ascent to power and the development of Nazism. Koppel was born in 1940, only a few months after his father was imprisoned.

His mother sold her own valuables and worked menial jobs in London to support her young son. Koppel’s father was still not allowed to work in England after his release from internment, nor would he allow his wife to work.

Following the war’s end, the family was able to reclaim some of their confiscated assets and opted to immigrate to the United States. Ted Koppel attended Abbotsholme School in Derbyshire while in England. His family relocated to the United States when he was 13 years old, where his mother, Alice, became a singer and pianist, and his father, Edwin, started a tire factory.

Koppel entered Syracuse University after attending the McBurney School, a private preparatory school in New York, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree at the age of 20. Koppel then moved on to Stanford University, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in political science and mass communication research. Grace Anne Dorney, his future wife, met him at Stanford.

Andrea (a former journalist), Deirdre, Andrew, and Tara are their four children. Andrew Koppel was discovered dead in a New York City condominium on May 31, 2010, allegedly after a day of drinking. Illicit substances were discovered in a post-mortem toxicological report.

Before working as a copyboy at The New York Times and as a writer at WMCA Radio in New York, Koppel worked as a teacher for a short time. In June 1963, he was employed by ABC Radio News as the youngest correspondent ever, working on the daily Flair Reports program.

The national news audience took notice of his and Charles Osgood’s coverage of the Kennedy assassination in 1963. He was supposed to provide a brief report, but due to a delay during the crisis, he had to improvise for an hour and a half.

He covered his first presidential nomination convention in 1964, the first of many. In Selma, Alabama, he began reporting the civil rights movement. Koppel’s ability to explain complex subjects in simple terms delighted ABC executives.

He moved from radio to national television when he became the ABC News correspondent for the Vietnam War in 1966. He agreed to take the job only after the network agreed to relocate his wife and two children to Hong Kong so they could be closer to him. Before leaving, he enrolled in a Vietnamese language course.

In 1990, Koppel held a town hall meeting in which he interviewed Nelson Mandela.

Koppel rose to prominence as the host of the late-night news program Nightline. The show began as a series of special reporting regarding the Iran hostage crisis, which lasted 444 days. Beginning in 1981, Koppel anchored a series of special programs called Viewpoint, which featured media critique and commentary while hosting Nightline.

Some liberal groups said Koppel was a mouthpiece for the government, accusing him of favouring conservatives when choosing guests.
