Tameka was born in College Park, Georgia, United States. Cottle was born to Dianne Cottle. Her father was Charles “Speedy” Pope. Her father and uncle formed a group The Tams. It was an R&B group. Her uncle’s name was Joseph Pope. She herself joined an R&B group Xscape. It was a quartet.

She joined the group in 1991 while going to Tri-Cities Performing Arts High School. The group came into the Eyes of a producer. His name was Jermaine Dupri.
