SMV fully abbreviated as Sisters with Voices is an American contemporary R&B trio from New York City, New York, United States. The members of SMV are Cheryl, Gamble and Tamara Johnson and Leanne Lyons. The group formed in 1988 as a gospel group. In the 1990s, the band is the most successful group. The group give has several hits like Weak, Right Here, I’m So Into You, and You’re the One.

The group went on a break in 1998, and they reunited in 2005. They have sold more than 25 million records across the world. Their single Weak reached no-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

The group sends its five-song demo to several labels. The band drew the attention of music producer Teddy Riley. He is the creator of New Jack Swing and the leader of the group named Guy.

Inception

The band formed by Cheryl Gamble, Tamara Taj Johnson, and Leanne Lelle Lyons. The manager Singleton sends demo tapes to several labels with bottles of Perrier so that they can get the attention of a producer. In 1991, RCA executives invited the band to sing live. The group signed a deal of eight-album record deal.

On 27 October 1992, the band released It’s About Time by RCA Records. The album became certified by the RIAA for more than two million copies. In 1992,  the collection first singles Right Here, released. The song ranked no.13 on the R&B charts.

The second single was released on I’m So into You and reached no. 2 on R&B and no-6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Later third single Weak was released and reached no-1 on both R&B charts. SMV reached no-8 on the US Billboard 200. The song of SMV used in the 1994 film Above the Rim.

Evolution

The second album of SWV was New Beginning. Their first single reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Neptune’s debut with the second single named Use Your Heart. The group song reached Hot 100 and #6 on the R&B chart.

In the United States, the album became certified platinum with 1,000,000 copies. The group appeared on the Waiting to Exhale: Original Soundtrack Album.

The third album of the band was Release Some Tension. The collection includes a guest appearance from E-40, Puff Daddy, Missy Elliot, Foxy Brown, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Queen Latifah, and many more. Several hit songs included in an album like Rain Someone, Can We, and Someone. In the United States, the album sold more than 500,000 copies and became certified gold.

After splitting from each other, the group members start focusing on their careers. After the band disbanded, Coco released her albums, which were not as successful as the previous one. She began focusing on her marriage life. On 31 October 2006, the Coko solo debut was released. In 2008, she performed on tour by Billboard Live Tour.

In 2005, the group started working on a new album. In the same year, group member Tak starts appearing on TV One reality series I Married. Her group members also appeared in some episodes of the show. The group made a special appearance in Bet Awards 2008 with the original lineup. Taj participated in show Survivor: Tocantins. In 2007, they performed with artists like After 7, Bobby Brown, New Edition, and Backstreet.

They signed a record deal with Mass Appeal Entertainment and E1 Entertainment. They released I Missed Us song in 2011.

The song ranked no.88 on their 100 most magnificent: Women in Music List. On 17 April 2012, SWV released 2012 vie eOne Music and Mass Appeal Entertainment.

In 2016, the fifth studio album I Missed Us released. On 17 April 2012, the band appeared on The Wendy Williams Show.

Awards & Achievements

SWV nominated for several awards but mange to won only one award. In 1993, the group was chosen for awards like the American Music Award, Kids Choice Awards, and Billboard Music Award. In 2017, they won the Soul Train Award.
