Susanna Lee Hoffs was born on January 17, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, to a Jewish family. Her father, Joshua Allen Hoffs, was a psychoanalyst, and her mother, Tamar Ruth, was a film director. When Hoffs was a teenager, she started playing the guitar. She completed her schooling from the Palisades High School in Pacific Palisades in 1976.

While in college, Hoffs worked as a production assistant and also made her acting debut in the movie Stony Island. In 1980, she attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she received a bachelor’s degree in art.

Susanna Hoffs started her musical career when she founded the rock band “The Bangs,” along with Debbi Peterson and Vicki Peterson. Later, they changed the name to “The Bangles” after they received a legal claim by an East Coast boy band of the same name.
