Early Life & Biography

Cornelius Warren Grafton was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1940. Her father, Cornelius Warren Grafton, was a lawyer and occasionally was a writer of detective fiction, and her mother, Vivian Hansberger, was a former chemistry teacher. Despite the fact that her parents were alcoholics, she picked out the art of writing from her dad, which she practiced ever since she was young. Her mother died by killing herself in 1960 after a return from an operation to remove cancer brought about by her addiction to smoking and alcohol. Her father died in 1982

Grafton w Atherton High School and after she graduated, she joined the University of Louisville but then proceeded with her studies in Kentucky State Teachers College, before coming back to the University of Louisville where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English literature in 1961. Grafton also got some minors in humanities and fine arts.

Sue first got married at the age of 18 years to James L. Flood, the two had two children, a son and a daughter, but later divorced in the year 1961.

She again got married to her second husband named Al Schmidt in the year1962, and just like the first, it ended up in a messy divorce because of custody over their daughter.

In 1978 she married her third husband, Steven F. Humphrey, who was a teacher in California and Ken Turkey.

She died on December 28, 2017, at a cottage hospital in Santa Barbara, California, after a brave battle with cancer. Her daughter Jamie announced her death was announced the following day on Facebook.

After her graduation, she worked as a secretary and a cashier. She later perfected her writing skills, which were inspired by her farther. She finished writing her first five novels when she was 18 years old but chose to publish only two with the titles “The loblolly-Madonna war and Keziah Dane” in 1967. Later her books were adopted as films “Lolly-Madona xxx” being directed by Richard c. Sarafian.

Her writing did not go as expected; this made her shift her attention to screenplay writing for television. Some of her play included, Mark, I Love You, drama series” Nurse”  and Sex and the Single Parent. She practiced her television writing over the next 15 years.

She acquired the experience of how to structure a story, and because of this, she felt qualified to go back to fiction writing. In 1982 Grafton published her debut mystery novel “A” is for Alibi. She featured a private detective, “Kinsey million” in Santa, Teresa, California, the fictional town.

Grafton’s books were later referred to as the “alphabet novels.”

Her series begins with “A” Is for Alibi, published and set in 1982. “B” Is for Burglar, followed, then “C” Is for Corpse, she managed to combine the letters in her books, except X. The last alphabet novel Y is for yesterday was published in August 2017. she sadly died before publishing her last novel z is for Zero.
