Stephen Gregory Yzerman was born on May 9, 1965, in Cranbrook, Canada. He is the son of Jean Yzerman and Ron Yzerman. His siblings are Christopher, Gary, Michael, and Ronnie-Jean Yzerman.

Steve Yzerman entered the 1983 NHL Entry Draft and was selected by Detroit Red Wings. However, they wanted to send him back for a season in the training camp. In his rookie season, he was able to score 39 goals. Yzerman became the youngest player to play in the NHL All-Star game. In the 1985-86 season, he was named as the captain of the Detroit Red Wings.

In the 1988-89 season, he amassed 65 goals with 96 assists. In 1995, he led his team to appear in the Stanley Cup finals. The Detroit Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup after 42 years in 1997 under the captaincy of Yzerman.

His career was a bit hampered in the 2001-02 season due to a knee injury. In the off-season, he underwent knee realignment surgery and missed the first 61 games of the 2002-03 season.
