Steve Spurrier was born in Miami Beach, Florida, on the 20th of April, 1945. His father, J. Graham Spurrier, was a Presbyterian minister. As Graham Spurrier changed congregations frequently, the family had to move around repeatedly during Steve’s early childhood. He has spent his growing years in various cities, like Charlotte, North Carolina, New Port in Tennessee, and Johnson City.

However, it was during his stay at Johnson City that Steve Spurrier first started manifesting his athletic talents. Steve Spurrier’s famed achievements in the various sports he played while in High School caught the eye of the then coach of Florida University, Ray Graves, who decided to offer him a football scholarship. His career in College Football was between 1963 and 1966, during which he played 31 games and managed to maintain mind-blowing statistics, thereby garnering several awards.

His career in League Football started with the “San Francisco 49ers” in 1967. However, it was not until 1975 that he had his first breakthrough match against the ‘Los Angeles Rams,’ thereby becoming an indispensable part of the squad.

In April 1976, Steve Spurrier was shifted to the extension team “Tampa Bay Buccaneers.” After this, he began the downhill climb of his career. While with “Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” he hardly witnessed any wins and became increasingly frustrated. The team coach John Mc Kay’s decision to cut him out of the team further added to his woes leading to his eventual decision of quitting professional football in 1977.

In 1978, Steve Spurrier got his first coaching job at the University of Florida. After working as an assistant coach in a couple of other institutions, he finally became the head coach for the “Tampa Bay Bandits” who went on to play in the new United States Football League.
