Stephen Douglas Kerr was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on September 27 to parents Malcolm H. Kerr and Ann. He has three other siblings and has a grandfather who supported the cause of Near East relief in its campaign to rescue women and orphans post the disastrous Armenian Genocide in the Aleppo and Marash cities.

A large part of his childhood was spent in Middle Eastern Countries, mainly Lebanon. As for college, he took classes at the Cairo American College in Egypt and also the American Community School in Beirut. Kerr was traded again to the San Antonio Spurs offseason the next year. This serendipitous departure let him score his fourth consecutive NBA title.
