Stephen Fain Earle was born on January 17, 1955 in Monroe, Virginia, United States. His father was an air traffic controller who was stationed. As a child he mostly was brought up in San Antonio area with his sister Stacey Earle who is also a musician and a songwriter.

At the age of 11 years he has already began learning the guitar and when he got to the age of 13 years he had already participated in a contest. He was so determined for at the age of 14 years he left his house in search of his role model Townes van Zandt.

At jut the age of 19 yeas Steve had to start to hustle in order to fend for him so he moved to Nashville Tennessee to work on some blue collar jobs then after he was done he would sing at night. It was at this time when he started to play the bass guitar and also write songs for the “Guy Clark’s band in 1975.

In 1976 he featured on a documentary film on Nashville music scene called “Heartworm Highways”. After he stayed in Nashville for a while he decided to relocate to Texas where he started his own band called “Dukes”.

Then in the 80’s he made his return to Nashville and this time worked for pat Carter and Roy Dea publishers a their songwriter. Then in 1992 he co-wrote a song “When You Fall in Love” which made it to # 14 on the country charts.

In 1982steve released an EP known as “Pink and Black” where he also featured Dukes. The following year Steve was signed into a recording contract by Epic records.
