Early Life & Biography

Sterling Sharpe was born on April 6, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois. He is the son of Mary Alice Dixon and Pete Sharpe. His brothers are Shannon Sharpe and Libby Sharpe. He used to live with his grandparents in Glennville, Georgia. Right from an early age, he was passionate about football. Sharpe attended Glenville High School and was a member of the football, track, and basketball teams.

Later, he attended the University of South Carolina and played for the South Carolina Gamecocks. In there, he went on to become a wide receiver. Sharpe set school records with 17 career touchdowns and 169 career receptions. Before leaving the school, he set a record of 11 single-season receiving touchdowns.

Career

Sterling Sharpe entered the 1988 NFL Draft and was selected by The Green Bay Packers. During his rookie season, he was able to get 55 passes in 16 games. This was followed by leading the league with a massive 90 receptions. In doing so, he was able to break the record set by Don Hutson in 1945. He is also known for his strong hands. In 1992, he became one of the top passing tandems in the NFL.

Later, he teamed up with Brett Favre to set a single-season reception record in NFL. Sharp is one of the few players to win the “Triple Crown” receiver position. In 1993, he made 112 receptions and broke his own record. The following year, he was again able to make 1837 receptions which was the highest at that time. That same year, he was able to make four touchdown passes.

Unfortunately, he had a neck injury and his career as a wide receiver was cut down. In his career, he has made it five times to the Pro Bowl. He has appeared in 112 games for The Green Bay Packers. Additionally, he has made 65 touchdowns and the average receiving is 13.7. Even with all the success, he has stated that his performance could have been much better. Sharpe was able to make 20 passes from 1423 yards.

He also so had a toe injury but was able to come out successfully. However, the neck injury caused him a lot which made him retire from his favorite sports. Many believe that he will recover however he had to retire at just 29.

Following his retirement, Sharpe was appointed as an analyst by NFL Network. He has even worked as a broadcaster for ESPN. Sharpe analyzes games for NFL Game Day and NFL Prime Monday on the NFL Network.
