Early Life & Biography
Shirley Ann Mansion, named after her aunt Shirley who herself was named after Charlotte Bronte’s novel Shirley, was born on 26th August 1966 in Edinburgh. She was the daughter of Muriel Flora, a big-band singer and John Mitchell Manson, a university professor. She was the middle child with two sisters, Lindy and Jayne, two years older than her and Sarah, two years younger than her.
She did her childhood education in the Church of Scotland until the age of 12. She later studied in Broughton High School, where she was bullied, which led to her suffering from depression and body dysmorphic disorder. She would often carry sharp objects with her and would injury herself whenever she felt stress or anxious. She then joined a rebel group, which helped her in rebelling herself against the bullies, but she got into drugs, alcohol, and stealing.
She, however, overcame that phase and started volunteer work in a local hospital’s cafeteria; this was her first job. She then started working in Miss Selfridge, where she worked for five years. She became well known all over Edinburgh as she used free samples of Miss Selfridge to style hair for several local brands. She was also seen in the Jackie magazine modeling for clothes.
Manson has tied the knot twice, once with the Scottish artist Eddie Farrell in 1996, but got divorced in 2003 and then with the Garbage sound engineer Billy Bush in 2010 at Los Angeles.
