Born on 25 September 1991 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Lim was the second of three children of Singapore-born parents. He is of Han Chinese ethnicity. When Lim was 2 yrs, the family moved to Singapore. It was after nine years when Lim was 11 that the family again moved, but this time to the United States and settled in Acton, Massachusetts.

At a very early age, Lim showed interest in music and started off with a violin that his grandmother gifted him. But the instrument failed to appease him, and he broke it during a practice session.
