Shawn Kemp was born on November 26, 1969, in Elkhart, Indiana. Kemp was raised by his mother, Barbara, and used to play basketball at a very young age. Kemp went to school at Concord High and later became one of the best basketball players in the nation. He was in studying in senior year at that time.

While studying at the University of Kentucky, he obtained a scholarship. However, due to low grades, he was soon prevented from continuing the University. Kemp studied shortly at the Trinity Valley College in Athens soon after, and he entered the draft of the 1989 NBA at the age of 19.
