Shahid Khan was born in Lahore, Pakistan, on 18 July 1950. He was born to a middle-class family who was involved in the construction industry. His mother was a professor of mathematics. At the age of 16, he moved to the United States. He wanted to study at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
When he reached the United States, he used to spend his first nights with great difficulties, and his first job was washing dishes. He graduated from the UIUC College of Engineering with a degree of BSc in Industrial Engineering in 1971. In 1980, he bought Flex-N-Gate from his former employer. Khan made the company grow so that it supplied bumpers for the major three automakers.
