Shaggy 2 Dope or Joseph William Utsler was born on October 14, 1974, in Wayne, Michigan, U.S. He is of Polish and Cherokee descent. He has two siblings John Utsler who was a member of Insane Clown Posse, and Mike, who is part of the hip hop group Chop Shop. In 2015, his brother John was found dead in his house in Michigan.

Shaggy 2 Dope started his musical career in the year 1989 when he formed the group JJ Boys along with Kangol Joe, Joseph Bruce, and John Utsler and released the single “Party at the Top of the Hill.” The following year, they renamed their group as Inner City Posse and performed at local night clubs.
