  1. Sandy Koufax has made me prouder of any of my sports idols I have revered in my life ( and at 82 I have had quite
a few ). I, too , am a Jewish kid from Brooklyn ( Bensonhurst ) and attended New Utrecht High School , where I was Brooklyn champion in the shot put ( 1957 ) and silver medalist in the city championships . I , too played basketball at the Jewish Community Center , a few years after Sandy played there . I loved baseball as a kid , and the Brooklyn Dodgers was MY team . Roger Kahn’s “The Boys of Summer “ was a fascination for me . When the Dodgers left Brooklyn I suffered depression for quite a while , and my only interest in baseball after they left for L.A. was Sandy Koufax . I was so proud when he sat out his chance to start the ‘65 World Series in order to observe the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur . Amazing class and personal integrity and courage . I brimmed with pride and still do thinking about the high quality of this fine human being ( and greatest pitcher the game has known ). Le Chaim , Sandy !

  2. For me, as well, Sandy Koufax was the only pro athlete, whom I ever idolized. I was a pitcher through college. With a smile to friends, I sometimes compare my pitching to Sandy’s, noting that we’re both Jewish, both born and raised in Brooklyn, both southpaws, both threw our fastball straight over the top, our sinking curveball the same, and we both had a high kick.
Then I pause, and say, “And that, folks, is where the comparison ends!”
He was the greatest ever and a gentleman to match. My dad took me to Yankee Stadium for the opener of the 1963 Series, Sandy against Whitey Ford. Sandy struck out the first five Yankees he faced, Kubek, Richardson, Maris, Mantle and Elston Howard, on his way to setting the then series record by striking out a total of 15. The “Bums” won 5-2 and won the series in four against the favored Yanks. Heaven!!

  3. I’m a farm boy from South Central Ky. and no one makes me prouder than Sanford Koufax. I was the only Dodger fan in my class and possibly the entire school in ’63. Beating the Yanks in four was a dream. I have collected all of his Topps cards and many of the Fleers as well.
