His father, Helio Gracie, together with his brother Carlos founded Gracie jiu-jitsu martial arts. At an early age, he began training with his father during weekends and evenings after school. Royce began competing at the tender age of 8, and at the age of 16, he had received a blackbelt. After his decision to take martial arts as a career, his dad became his teacher.
