Ross alexander Cameron was born on 14 May 1965 in Sidney, Australia. He is the son of Jim Cameron but has not disclosed any details concerning his mother. He has a brother named Jock Cameron.
Just like him, his father is also a politician and a former member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. He grew up in Turramurra and attended Knox Grammar School. He graduated as a lawyer from Sydney University.

After Cameron departed from his job as a lawyer, he joined politics being elected during the 1996 Federal election and won in the Division of Parramatta defeating the Labor candidate, Paul Elliott. He made his maiden speech to the House of Representatives without notes.
