In 1981 rumor has it that while they were eating at a restaurant with his fellow TI engineers, Jim Harris and Bill Murto, they sketched out a design for a personal computer on a napkin. The three men later put up $1000 each in order to form Compaq computer corporation company in 1982. In the initial year of operation, Compaq set its first us business record with revenue over $111 million and shipped more than 53000 portable PCs.
The company’s first public offering of stock raised $67 million a year later. The company set another record of $329 million in its second year of operation and shipped almost 150000 PCs worldwide. The company later received backing from venture capitalist Benjamin M. Rosen who became chairman of the board of Compaq. Canion was later dismissed by Benjamin M Rosen in 1991, but he later founded Insource Technology Group in 1992 together with Jim Harris and Ronald L. Fischer.
Canion served as chairman to Insource Technology Group until 2006. He led the initial investment round for Questia media Inc. in 1999, which provides an online research library. He became chairman of the board and later helped raise $150 million for the company. Canion is a member of AMVESCAP, BlueArc, and Young Life and Health Link, and he is also the Director Emeritus of the Houston Technology Centre.
