Robert Lyle Knepper was born on 8^th July 1959 in Fremont, Ohio, to his parents Pat Deck and Donald Knepper.  His dad used to work as a veterinarian in Maumee, Ohio, while his mother worked in a community theatre as a props-handler. Robert developed an interest in acting at a very tender age.

This was influenced by his mother working in a theatre where he used to accompany her once in a while. After the completion of his high school studies, he joined Northwestern University for his degree. While in university, he got professional acting roles In Chicago. When almost graduating, he quit Northwestern University to go and work in a theatre in New York City.
