Robert Lyle Knepper was born on 8th July 1959 in Fremont, Ohio, to his parents Pat Deck and Donald Knepper.  His dad used to work as a veterinarian in Maumee, Ohio, while his mother worked in a community theatre as a props-handler. Robert developed an interest in acting at a very tender age.

This was influenced by his mother working in a theatre where he used to accompany her once in a while. After the completion of his high school studies, he joined Northwestern University for his degree. While in university, he got professional acting roles In Chicago. When almost graduating, he quit Northwestern University to go and work in a theatre in New York City.

Robert has had several ups and downs in his personal life, some that almost ruined his career in the movie industry. He married his first wife, Tory Herald, who together are blessed with a son Benjamin Peter, born in 2002. In 2009, the couple announced their divorce due to irreconcilable differences. Though they divorced, they have been co-parenting since then. After his divorce to Tory, he met with Nadine Kary, who he married in 2013. The couple has no child together.

In 2017, Susan Bertram, a costume designer, accused him of sexually assaulting her during one of the sets of Gas Food Lodging film in 1991. In an Instagram post, Robert denied the allegations. Almost 27 years later, Susan filed for defamation, and four additional allegations alleged to have taken place between 1983-2013 allegations that Knepper vehemently denied.
