Smith, the fourth generation Coloradoan, was born to Dr. William Robert Smith and Dr. Sylvia Myma Smith on 1 December 1962.  Both his parents were school teachers with PhDs. Smith is of African-American ethnicity and holds an American nationality. He grew up in a middle-class neighborhood in Denver.

When Smith was an infant, his mother carried him to the March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his eminent speech, “I Have a Dream.” He studied at Carson Elementary School and East High School in Denver. Still studying in High School, he got an internship at Bell Labs; but was told that the internship was for college students. He didn’t lose hope and kept calling every day. One day when a student from M.I.T didn’t show up, he got the admission. There he developed a reliability test for semiconductors.
