Szatkowski attended Pennfield Senior High School in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he grew up. In 1987, Szatkowski made his debut appearance on WWF television in a skit with Ted DiBiase, “The Million Dollar Man.” DiBiase was picking individuals from the audience and paying them to perform disgusting actions at the time, and he offered Szatkowski, who was 16 at the time, $100 to enter the ring and kiss his foot, which he did.

Career
After being taught by The Sheik, Szatkowski made his debut in 1990, wrestling his first match against Dango Nguyen in Toledo, Ohio. Ron Slinker, a promoter in Florida, gave Rob the moniker Rob Van Dam in 1991. He competed in the United States Wrestling Association (USWA) and South Atlantic Pro Wrestling, among other independent promotions in Michigan (SAPW).
