Rob Pelinka is the son of Robert Todd Pelinka Sr., who was a former high school basketball coach who gave him some fundamental knowledge of basketball. He has been involved in basketball from an early age. He studied in Lake Forest School in Illinois, U.S., and then went to Lake Forest High School. He holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and BBA from Ross School of Business. He started to play basketball for Lake Forest High School. He was also named NCAA Male Walter Byers Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1993.
